Last Wednesday, I called my wife to tell her the good news. My announcement that I was available for hire had worked. I had a new position and start date. And more importantly, it was a cool position. She gave me the congratulations such a feat deserved but also used it to remind me how very right she was about me getting hired quickly and about how I was way more worried about it than she was.
This is a woman after my own heart. Don’t let my head get too big.
With that, I am excited to announce that I am the brand new Community Director for ERE.net. And I start… well, now. I guess I better get to work.
ERE started as a community of recruiting professionals communicating initially via Morse code and light signals an e-mail listserve, moved to an online forum and then finally morphed into its current format. While this is a new position for ERE, various people along the way have played a valuable role in this community.
I am looking forward to learning from those people and pushing forward aggressively to kick the online community in high gear. Some of those changes are going to be technical. Some of those may be editorial. And certainly outreach is critical to my mission as well.
Late last week, I had the opportunity to touch base with almost everyone on the team. We’ve already started some preliminary discussions around direction and these folks are excited that this focus is happening. This is a huge area of opportunity for ERE.
Most of all, I am looking forward to talking less about me and what I’ve done in the past and more about what I am doing and the takeaways I can share with all of you.
I know I can be cynical at times but community and networking are going to be critical to HR and recruiting this next decade. Bank on it. I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of our community and I know dozens of people who are in the same boat too. It is an exciting time to be tackling these issues.
For everyone who helped me out, a sincere thank you.

Congrats Lance! Look forward to seeing you in San Diego.
Thanks Sharlyn. Looking forward to San Diego for sure.
Congratulations Lance! Your wife is indeed a wise woman and ERE is smart for grabbing you to develop their community. As someone who has participated in the ERE Community since the list serve days, I’m glad to see that they’re taking steps to make their content more accessible and easier to engage with. Very cool job for you!
I was going to say something about being an old timer but I thought better of it
— Always looking for feedback on the community so let me know what you think.
Awesome, Lance! ERE is smart for picking you up. I’m looking forward to seeing how ERE progresses with them having you on the team.

Don’t mind at all. Let me know if you need a bigger picture
Good move on ERE’s part. Looking forward to talking more about community with you in San Diego. I work with a great group of community managers through @TheCR. I’ll be helping them with their specific #worklife challenges in early March…looking forward to your take…as I know it will be honest and sensible.
I’ve just learned about theCR so I am hoping I can get involved as well in that community too.
Welcome to the ERE team, Lance!
Thanks David
Bravo Lance- a hand in glove fit!- you will have fun and love this role.
Fo sho Debbie.

Does this you maybe relocating to New York City?

Thanks Michael. And it was great seeing you last month in DC!
Congrats Lance! You’ll do fantastic in this role. Can you get some events drawn up to the PacNW now?
I think it is mandatory now. PNW needs some love.
Congrats, Lance! I just recently started (same timing you did – ready, set, NOW!) a similar position here at the Washington Business Journal (we’re in that other Washington, the one with a ton of red tape and even more snow right now) after writing about HR and life at work. Let me know if you’re ever up for a cup of coffee (virtual or in person if you find yourself in town) to compare notes. Best of luck!
Very cool Jennifer. We’ll definitely have to get together.
Congratulations! ERE was invaluable to me when I was recruiting. It’s nice to see you land with such a great gig.
Me too! Thanks.
CONGRATS! Best Wishes in your new role. ERE was very smart to aquire you and your talented self!
Thanks Shennee
Lance: I might as well be living in a cave, I hadn’t seen your posts or tweets last week so didn’t know you were looking. But congrats on the new gig. Will you be working with Todd R.? We collaborated some while he was still at Workforce.com and it was a pleasure. Best of luck in your new role.
Michelle Rafter
Todd has the unfortunate pleasure of working together with me
Thanks
Your online community is following and listening. Good for ERE!
Thanks Lyn. Now everyone, get over to ERE
Congrats! Looking forward to continuing to follow your well-deserved success
Thanks Rebecca. You’re always too kind.

Thanks Kristin! Sending something your way.
Great news!
A perfect fit for ERE and you!
Congrats to David Manaster and team for hiring you!
Congrats to me for tricking them
Thanks Gautam.
Congrats Lance. I’m excited to see what you will do with this new role. ERE is fortunate to have you.
Best of luck!
Thanks Jason. It will be interesting to see how it develops as it comes along.
You forgot that your #1 job is being my #officespouse. I hope Manaster doesn’t disapprove.
Most days, I ask myself “What #officespouse?” Then the day comes when you need a piece of software upgraded or something isn’t working
Hey Lance –
I know I’m late to the party but wanted to offer congratulations and best of luck in the new role. I’m a frequent visitor to ere and look forward to the improvements that will come. Amazing how quickly you were scooped up. Imagine if everyone was wise enough to be as networked as you and how it could revolutionize recruiting and the job search process.
you think you’re cynical?
anytime you want to bounce ideas off a bald head, give me a call.
congrats
