Great read and good connection. My question is in all of this - how many companies have succession plans? Better yet, even consider succession planning in their org structures and talent acquisition process? I continually get calls from managers and Directors telling me of the sudden gap that come across their department due to the loss of someone vital to their success. Is succession planning something of myths?

I will say that in the more senior roles we recruit for at the VP and C levels, this methodology comes more into play but I think that the lack of it taking place at the lower levels is what plays a constant strain on businesses reacting to the news that their top employee has left the company.

Strategy planning always seems to take a back seat at that place in the company where the rubber meets the road and "the people at corporate" do that stuff. But I think if we took the time to layout our departments and teams like leadership does for the company, we would be in a much better position to react to that event we all know will happen one day. Better yet, it will not be all that frightful.

Lance - great look at succession planning from the sports angle! I'll bet a lot of Fantasy Football managers are thinking about succession planning a lot more seriously now too!

I included your post in my weekly Rainmaker 'Fab Five' blog picks from the past week as found here: http://www.maximizepossibility.com/employee_retention/2008/09/the-rainmaker-2.html

Be Well!

Lance -

Nice post. Interesting that Steve had a client who got off the snide based on the Tom Brady thing. Just goes to show you that sports can play an important role in contrasting workplace issues.

PS - we haven't talked about this, but Rudy can play. Should be a VERY interesting season this winter in rip city...

Lance,

Having been prodded, prodded--Bueller? Bueller?--then finally peeled off the coach on opening day, I eventually returned to the world of work to find:

Tom Brady's situation had lit a fire in one of my client organizations. The company had been dragging its feet a bit with succession planning in earnest. After seeing what happened so suddenly to the QB, succession planning was catapulted to the top of the "to do" list with a flurry of deliberate activity now in motion.

I wonder how many other organizations saw the connection?
